Finland Investigates Russian Reconnaissance Aircraft Airspace Violation
Finland is investigating a Russian Ilyushin IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft that penetrated Finnish airspace for three minutes in the Gulf of Finland.
The Ministry of Defence of Finland is investigating a suspected violation of Finnish airspace by a Russian Ilyushin IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft on Thursday, August 21, 2026. The incursion occurred in the Gulf of Finland, south of Utö, where the aircraft penetrated Finnish territory by approximately 4.7 nautical miles at its deepest point. The breach lasted roughly three minutes.
Defence Minister Antti Hakkanen confirmed the investigation, stating that every suspected violation of air space is taken seriously. In response to the incident, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland summoned the Russian ambassador to demand an explanation and seek clarification regarding the breach. The Finnish Border Guard is currently leading the probe into the specific circumstances of the flight.
This event follows a pattern of increasing tension, including suspected incursions by two Russian military aircraft in May and June. Finland has maintained a state of high alert since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which led the country to abandon military non-alignment and join NATO in April 2023.
