Jordan Condemns Israeli Settler Incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque
The Jordanian government condemned the entry of over 1,100 Israeli settlers into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound during the holiday of Sukkot.
The Ministry of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs of Jordan condemned incursions by Israeli settlers into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem on September 27, 2026. Between 1,100 and 1,500 settlers entered the site under heavy police protection during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, performing Talmudic rituals and prayers near the Al-Qattanin and Al-Hutta gates.
Israeli authorities closed the Al-Maghariba Gate and compelled shop owners in the Al-Qattanin Market to close their businesses while rituals were conducted. Simultaneously, Palestinian officials reported that Israeli forces restricted Muslim worshippers, permitting only four mourners to enter for a funeral prayer before ordering them to leave.
Jordan characterized these actions as a flagrant violation of the historical and legal status quo and a desecration of the site's sanctity. Spokesperson Fuad Majali stated that the incursions aim to impose new realities through the temporal and spatial division of the mosque. Jordan reaffirmed that the Jerusalem Awqaf and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department maintains exclusive jurisdiction over the administration of the compound and called on the international community to compel Israel to halt violations against holy sites.
