Joan Ruddock Petitions for National Voting Reform Commission

Former Labour MP Joan Ruddock initiated a parliamentary petition calling for the establishment of a national commission on voting reform. The petition seeks an independent, time-limited, and expert-led review designed to build consensus for changing the electoral system used for the UK Parliament.

The effort has garnered over 25,000 signatures and aligns with a proposal from an all-party parliamentary group. Supporters argue that a national commission provides a more reliable method for representing British views than a public referendum.

Sandy Martin of the Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform cited the 2011 rejection of the alternative vote system as a flawed process. Martin argued that the previous failure was driven by a lack of public awareness, making an expert-led commission a preferable alternative for achieving systemic change.
