Plateau House Assembly Passes Law for Lawmaker Life Pensions
The Plateau State House of Assembly passed a bill for second reading to provide life pensions for former lawmakers, sparking condemnation from the opposition PDP.
The Plateau State House of Assembly passed a bill for second reading on Tuesday that would provide pensions and retirement benefits for former speakers, deputy speakers, principal officers, and members of the assembly. Sponsored by Representative Eli Ankala, the legislation also proposes the creation of the Plateau State House of Assembly Pension Board to manage fund administration, maintain records, and eliminate ghost pensioners.
During the plenary session presided over by Speaker Daniel Nanlong, Ankala argued the bill is designed to ensure that eligible former lawmakers receive benefits in an orderly manner while promoting the prudent management of public resources. He stated the board would strengthen administration through proper documentation and regular verification to prevent irregularities.
On Wednesday, the Plateau State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party condemned the legislation, labeling it as reckless, insensitive, and a gross abuse of public trust. The party argued that providing lifelong financial benefits is an act of extreme greed and wickedness given the state's ongoing security challenges and economic deficits. The PDP called for the immediate withdrawal of the bill, asserting that the mandate of lawmakers is to legislate for the common good rather than create state-funded wealth for themselves.
