Graham Platner Becomes Presumptive Democratic Nominee for Maine Senate
Graham Platner emerged as the presumptive Democratic nominee to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins after Governor Janet Mills suspended her campaign due to lack of funding.
Following the withdrawal of Governor Janet Mills on May 1, 2026, progressive outsider Graham Platner has become the presumptive Democratic nominee to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in Maine's U.S. Senate race. Mills cited a lack of financial resources and momentum for her decision to suspend her campaign, despite early recruitment and endorsements from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
Platner, a Marine veteran and oyster farmer, significantly outpaced Mills in fundraising and polling by running an anti-establishment campaign targeting the billionaire class. His candidacy has been marked by severe controversy, including a chest tattoo of a Nazi SS Totenkopf symbol and inflammatory social media posts. Platner attributed these to post-traumatic stress from his military service in Iraq and Afghanistan. While he has earned endorsements from Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, he has faced sharp criticism from Senator John Fetterman, who described him as an avowed communist.
Senator Collins has pivoted toward the general election, characterizing Platner as an extremist and utilizing his personal history to attack Democratic leadership. Platner has responded by linking Collins to the Trump administration and promising an activist approach to governance, including potential arrests if Democrats fail to secure a Senate majority. While Platner is the frontrunner, candidate David Costello remains in the primary race ahead of the June 9 vote.
