BJP Councillor R. Sreelekha Announces Resignation From Thiruvananthapuram Corporation
BJP councillor R. Sreelekha announced her resignation from the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, citing personal reasons amid reports of dissatisfaction over a denied mayoral post.
BJP councillor and former Director General of Police R. Sreelekha announced her resignation from the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, reportedly submitting a letter to Mayor V.V. Rajesh on September 30. Sreelekha informed residents via WhatsApp that she intended to submit the letter to the District Collector on Monday. The move follows reports that she was denied the mayoral post despite previous promises.
Mayor V.V. Rajesh confirmed receipt of the letter but described the situation as a matter of personal inconveniences that the party is working to resolve. However, Corporation Secretary J. Muhammed Shafi stated the resignation is not legally valid under Section 40 of the Kerala Municipality Act, as such letters must be submitted directly to the Secretary's office.
If the resignation is finalized, the Bharatiya Janata Party's strength in the 101-member council would drop to 49. Opposition leaders from the LDF have dismissed the action as blackmail politics, with CPM district secretary V. Joy characterizing the narrative as a calculated bargaining tactic aimed at party leadership.
