DMK Overhauls Organization After Tamil Nadu Election Defeat
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is restructuring its district units and implementing age limits following its defeat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) announced a major organizational overhaul on August 22, 2026, following its defeat in the May Assembly elections. During an executive committee meeting at the Anna Arivalayam headquarters in Chennai, party president M. K. Stalin adopted nine resolutions to professionalize operations and facilitate generational succession.
The restructuring increases the number of district units from 78 to 110, with each district generally covering two Assembly constituencies. To introduce new leadership, the party implemented a two-term limit for all organizational posts and strict age caps, ranging from 45 for branch secretaries to 70 for district secretaries. Those over 70 will be shifted to state or zonal roles. Additionally, the party abolished the standalone city secretary post in favor of a zone-based system. These changes follow performance reviews of former ministers and district secretaries conducted by senior leaders and the political strategy firm PEN.
This internal shift occurs amid a political clash with the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government over the upcoming delimitation exercise. Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin accused Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay of diluting the state's demand to freeze Lok Sabha seats at 543 by omitting the word freeze during a Southern Zonal Council meeting. In response, TVK Minister Adhav Arjuna claimed the DMK has historically shifted its position on the seat cap, arguing that requesting only fair delimitation would be a betrayal to Tamil Nadu.
