Microsoft Launches Xbox Labs to Explore AI-Assisted Game Modding
Microsoft established Xbox Labs to research game decompilation and AI-assisted modding to expand cross-platform accessibility and player creativity.
Microsoft has launched Xbox Labs, a specialized experimental division composed of engineers, scientists, and game makers. Announced by Asha Sharma, CEO of Xbox, the initiative focuses on game decompilation, recompilation, and AI-assisted modding to explore how emerging technologies can modernize the gaming experience.
Led by Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet, the group responds to a growing trend of users employing AI models to port Windows games to Apple Silicon or run them in browsers using WebAssembly and WebGPU. Sharma noted that these developments challenge traditional boundaries between software and hardware, as games are rapidly decompiled and rebuilt for unsupported hardware. She observed that some of the world's largest games have even been remixed into the source code of others.
Xbox Labs will operate as an exploratory research body rather than a consumer product team, building tools in the open to share lessons with industry partners and developers. While the initiative aims to revive older titles and empower players to become creators, it introduces complexities regarding the unauthorized use of intellectual property and existing business models. This launch follows a period of restructuring at Microsoft and the recent creation of the XP transmedia division.
