Equinix Data Center Leaks 5,000 Gallons of Diesel in New Jersey

Approximately 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from a storage tank at an Equinix data center in Secaucus, New Jersey, on Friday night. The fuel entered a creek that serves as a tributary to the Hackensack River, though the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Coast Guard prevented the spill from reaching the river using vacuum trucks and protective booms.

Equinix is currently investigating the root cause of the leak. The incident has intensified demands from environmental activists for Governor Mikie Sherrill to implement a statewide moratorium on data centers. Critics argue that the industry's reliance on large-scale diesel backup generators poses significant environmental risks.

Ben Dziobek, Executive Director of Climate Revolution Action Network, stated that the industry is operating without rules and that the resulting problems do not stop at municipal boundaries.
