Lloyds Bank Apologizes After Withholding Church Funds
Lloyds Bank issued a formal apology after a system fault delayed the transfer of church funds for four months, forcing the congregation to borrow money.
Lloyds Bank delayed the transfer of nearly £5,500 from a closed parish church account for more than four months, leaving a small congregation unable to pay electricity bills and essential repairs. The situation began in November when the bank required the church to transition to a business account, but a system fault blocked the online setup process.
Despite multiple visits to a local branch, the bank failed to move the funds and claimed to have lost the customer's identity verification documents. The congregation was forced to borrow money from parishioners to maintain basic operations during the delay.
Following a formal complaint and the threat of public exposure, the bank transferred the funds and provided £400 in goodwill payments along with £96 in lost interest. A spokesperson for the bank admitted the institution "should have handled things better" and apologized for the customer's difficult experience.
