Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Negotiates Water Sharing in Andhra Pradesh

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to negotiate the release of Krishna River water for Chennai.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay visited Vijayawada on October 13, 2026, for his first official trip to Andhra Pradesh since taking office. The visit combined religious activities and diplomatic negotiations, beginning with prayers at the Kanaka Durga Temple and participation in the Vijayawada Utsav 2.0 celebrations at Punnami Ghat.

Following these events, Vijay met with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu at the latter's official residence in Amaravati. The leaders focused on critical inter-state water management, specifically the release of Krishna River water to Chennai under the Telugu Ganga Project. The urgency of the talks stems from a significant shortfall; by early October, Tamil Nadu had received only 2.251 tmc of the 12 tmc annually required for Chennai's drinking water needs.

Beyond immediate supplies, the bilateral discussions addressed long-term water security and agricultural stability through the proposed Godavari-Cauvery River Linkage Project. During the visit, Vijay was also scheduled to meet with Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and was welcomed at the official residence by Minister Nara Lokesh.
