Asian Shares Rise as AI Stocks Recover Amid Oil Spikes

Asian stocks gained Wednesday as AI and semiconductor shares rebounded, though Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia pushed Brent crude to $106.60.

Asian shares rose on Wednesday as artificial intelligence and semiconductor stocks recovered from a recent selloff. In South Korea, the Kospi gained 1.8 percent, led by more than 2 percent increases for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Japan's Nikkei also posted gains of 0.2 percent.

Market sentiment was bolstered by comments from New York Federal Reserve President John Williams, who suggested the Federal Reserve may raise the policy rate once more this year to combat inflation, though he sees no need for further hikes in 2027. In India, stocks rose following remarks by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman regarding potential changes to transaction taxes on share trading.

These gains were tempered by rising energy costs. Brent crude climbed to $106.60 following Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia. Investors remain cautious as they await Chinese inflation data to assess domestic demand and United States consumer price index data, which economists estimate will show headline inflation accelerating to an annual 3.6 percent for September.
