Congress and Opposition Vow to Block FCRA Amendment Bill

The Indian National Congress and other opposition parties, including the DMK and NCP(SP), have vowed to block the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. Expected to be introduced during the final week of the monsoon session, the bill aims to increase transparency and accountability regarding foreign contributions. However, AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal characterized the legislation as unconstitutional and anti-people, alleging the central government is targeting minorities and NGOs.

To prevent the bill from passing with minimal opposition, the Congress party issued a whip for its MPs to remain present in both Houses from August 10 to 12. President Mallikarjun Kharge announced that opposition floor leaders would meet on Monday to finalize their strategy. Meanwhile, DMK president MK Stalin called for the total withdrawal of the bill and the repeal of Section 15 of the 2010 Act.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has attempted to mitigate regional concerns through meetings with Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Christian community representatives, assuring that the legislation will not be retrospective. Simultaneously, the opposition is demanding that Shah provide answers regarding the use of tear gas and pellet guns against student protesters in Delhi during July 2026.
