UK Launches Guided Retirement Plan for 17 Million Workers
The Department for Work and Pensions introduced Guided Retirement to provide private-sector workers with secure, inflation-protected income options during retirement.
The Department for Work and Pensions launched the Guided Retirement initiative on November 3, 2026, to provide approximately 17 million private-sector workers with more secure income options during retirement. The program aims to bridge the gap between public-sector pensions, which offer inflation-protected income for life, and private-sector Defined Contribution pensions that often leave savers with a lump sum and the risk of outliving their savings.
Under the proposal, pension providers would be required to offer a default pension option for savers approaching retirement. To support this, the government introduced a consultation on Retirement Collective Pension Schemes, which would allow for the pooling of risk to serve as these default options. The Guided Retirement consultation was developed in coordination with the Financial Conduct Authority and the Pensions Regulator and will remain open until December 22, 2026.
Minister for Pensions Torsten Bell stated that the government is resurrecting proper pensions for private-sector workers to ensure they have an income that lasts throughout retirement. Financial Conduct Authority Executive Director Therese Chambers and Pensions Regulator Executive Director Richard Knox both emphasized that savers should not have to navigate complex financial decisions alone and that well-designed default options are necessary to create sustainable retirement income.
