Meta Expands Teen Content Restrictions Globally Across All Platforms

Meta Platforms Inc. expanded its 13+ content settings globally across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger on June 2, 2026. The update automatically places users under 18 into Teen Accounts, which by default filter out content related to sexual themes, violence, self-harm, and risky stunts. These barriers can only be removed with parental permission.

As part of the rollout, Meta is testing a tool on Instagram to diversify teen feeds by limiting repetitive exposure to specific themes, such as nutrition, weightlifting, and anxiety management. The company also announced that a stricter Limited Content setting will be added to Facebook and Messenger later this year and that these restrictions are being extended to Meta AI.

These measures follow a period of intense legal and regulatory pressure. In March 2026, a Los Angeles jury found Meta and Alphabet Inc. negligent for designing platforms harmful to young people, awarding $6 million to a plaintiff. Other legal challenges included cases regarding the exposure of children to sexual predators and a dispute with the Motion Picture Association of America over Meta's unauthorized use of the PG-13 rating to describe its filters.

The global expansion follows an October 2025 pilot in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. It aligns with broader international trends, including minor-focused social media bans in Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Australia, and new age-verification blueprints from the European Union.
