Kuje Council Chairman Threatened to Expel Non-APC Supporters

Amnesty International and political groups have condemned Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, Chairman of the Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, after a video emerged in which he threatened to expel residents who refuse to support the All Progressives Congress (APC). In the recording, Shekwolo stated that residents must either support the APC or leave the area council, linking this demand to President Bola Tinubu's 2027 re-election bid and development projects led by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

Amnesty International characterized the remarks as a call to violence and a direct attack on the freedom of association, describing Shekwolo as a danger to society. The organization urged the Nigeria Police Force to intervene to prevent political intimidation. Similarly, the Peter Obi Grassroots Mobilisation rejected the statements, calling them a direct threat to democracy and demanding a public apology.

In response, Tumaka Danlami Stephen, the chairman's chief protocol officer, dismissed the allegations. Stephen argued that the video was taken out of context and that Shekwolo was merely making an appeal for political reciprocity based on the dividends of democracy rather than issuing a threat of eviction. The controversy follows the Independent National Electoral Commission's publication of the 2027 election timetable, with presidential polls set for January 16, 2027.
