Uber Partners With Zipline to Scale Drone Deliveries

Uber Technologies is investing in drone startup Zipline to integrate autonomous air delivery into Uber Eats, targeting one million daily deliveries by 2029.

Uber Technologies has entered a strategic partnership and made an undisclosed investment in drone startup Zipline to integrate autonomous air delivery into the Uber Eats platform. The companies aim to reach a capacity of one million drone deliveries per day by the end of 2029. Initial service is scheduled to launch by the end of 2026, starting in existing Zipline markets including Dallas and Houston, Texas, before expanding to dozens of other U.S. cities.

The drones, capable of speeds up to 70 mph, are designed to fulfill takeout and grocery orders within five to ten minutes. This initiative is part of a broader hybrid delivery strategy that combines human couriers, sidewalk robots, and autonomous aircraft. The move follows Uber's decision to sell its internal autonomous and aerial divisions in favor of integrating third-party technology providers, including previous collaborations with Flytrex and Manna.

CEO Dara Khosrowshahi described the shift toward quick commerce as a potential enormous tailwind for the growth of Uber Eats. This expansion coincides with a larger push into autonomous technology, including a plan to deploy approximately $10 billion to scale autonomous vehicle partners across 15 cities by late 2026. Despite these advancements and second-quarter gross bookings of $58 billion, Uber's stock has declined roughly 9% this year as investors weigh high upfront autonomous transition costs against long-term savings.
