Smartmatic Demonstrates New Voting System in Louisiana

Smartmatic demonstrated a new voting system to Louisiana voters and officials in Baton Rouge on Wednesday. The company is seeking state certification to compete as one of seven vendors vying for a contract to supply the state's election equipment.

The proposed system replaces older electronic machines with a hybrid process. Voters cast electronic ballots that produce a printed physical copy containing a QR code for scanning, creating both a digital and physical record of the vote. This demonstration drew mixed reactions from election officials; some praised the paper audit trail, while others raised concerns regarding the security of computer-based systems and the origin of the machine components.

The Government of Louisiana Secretary of State expects to select a final vendor by the end of 2026. Initial parish rollouts are scheduled to begin in spring 2027, with full statewide implementation following two years later.
