Bill Gates Warns of 20-Year AI Economic Upheaval
Bill Gates warns that the transition to an AI-driven economy could cause two decades of social and economic disruption and employment instability.
Bill Gates warned that the transition to an artificial intelligence-driven economy could trigger up to 20 years of economic and social upheaval. Speaking on the Decoder podcast, the Microsoft co-founder stated that the shift will create winners and losers and disrupt employment, even if the technology is managed successfully.
Gates noted that AI and humanoid robotics could eventually automate physical labor, including food production, home construction, and surgery. However, he suggested that societies may choose to reserve specific roles, such as the arts and childcare, for humans.
He argued that governments and society are currently unprepared for the pace of development. Gates urged for stronger government oversight and technical safeguards to mitigate biological threats and cyberattacks, asserting that AI companies cannot be solely responsible for risk management.
