UK Government Finalizes Review of PIP Benefit Payments

The Department for Work and Pensions is finalizing a review of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) that proposes maintaining cash awards while adding non-cash support options.

The Department for Work and Pensions is finalizing the Timms Review to determine the future of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) cash payments. In response to inquiries from MP Neil Duncan-Jordan, the department stated that final arrangements for these payments have not yet been confirmed.

Stephen Timms announced that the review steering group is currently finalizing recommendations before the publication of a final report expected in autumn 2026. Preliminary findings from September indicate that cash payments should remain the foundation of PIP awards. However, the group proposed that some recipients could receive non-cash support, including transport services, mobility aids, and equipment, to supplement their payments.

Other proposals within the review include keeping PIP as a non-means-tested benefit and simplifying the application process. The group also suggested reducing the frequency of unnecessary reviews for individuals with degenerative or lifelong conditions. The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions will decide on the next steps once the final report is released.
