Australia June Jobs Surge Increases Likelihood of Rate Hikes
Australia added 76,300 jobs in June, far exceeding forecasts and raising expectations that the Reserve Bank of Australia will hike interest rates in August.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported a surprise surge of 76,300 new jobs in June 2026, significantly exceeding the consensus estimate of 15,000. This growth was primarily driven by a 47,000 increase in part-time employment, while full-time employment rose by 29,300. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained steady at 4.4%, though the participation rate climbed to 67.0%, the highest level since July 2025.
Despite the headline strength, the underemployment rate rose to 6.5% and underutilisation reached 10.9%, both hitting multi-month highs. Seek Limited reported a 0.9% decline in job advertisements during the same period. Analysts note that the labor market's resilience, combined with a 4.75% increase in minimum award wages and a 26% spike in crude oil prices, has intensified inflationary pressures.
These developments have shifted market expectations for the Reserve Bank of Australia. The implied probability of a rate hike at the August 11-12 meeting rose from 25% to approximately 33%, while the chance of at least one hike by year-end climbed to 95%. Some economists project a 0.25% increase in August, which would bring the cash rate to 4.6%, depending on upcoming June quarter consumer price index data. However, some forecasts suggest unemployment could still rise to 4.6% by the end of the year due to economic disruptions caused by conflict in the Middle East.
