Greater Anglia cancelled multiple trains and issued travel warnings after a track defect at Sawbridgeworth blocked a major line to Stansted Airport.
A track defect at Sawbridgeworth blocked a major rail line on August 25, 2026, causing widespread cancellations and delays for passengers traveling to Stansted Airport. The disruption primarily affected Stansted Express services between London Liverpool Street and the airport, as well as routes serving Cambridge and Bishop’s Stortford.
Greater Anglia reported that at least six trains were cancelled during the afternoon. Network Rail dispatched investigation teams to the site of the fault by 2:15 p.m. to address the blockage.
To mitigate the impact on holidaymakers, rail authorities arranged for tickets to be accepted on Great Northern and Thameslink services, while advising passengers to utilize London Underground lines. Greater Anglia is providing compensation to passengers delayed by 15 minutes or more through its Delay Repay scheme.
