German Machinery Orders Fall 5 Percent in August
German machinery orders dropped 5 percent in August 2026 due to weakening domestic and overseas demand, according to the industry association VDMA.
German machinery orders fell 5 percent in real terms in August 2026 compared to the previous year. According to the VDMA, the decline resulted from weakening demand both at home and abroad, with domestic orders dropping 2 percent and foreign orders falling 6 percent.
Regional data shows a sharper decline within the euro zone, where orders plummeted 10 percent, while non-euro zone markets saw a 5 percent decrease. The sector recorded no orders for large-scale plants during August, marking a significant shift from the previous year's performance.
Despite the August downturn, the sector maintained some growth earlier in the year. Machinery orders rose 7 percent year-on-year over the three months leading up to August and increased 4 percent for the first eight months of 2026.
Johannes Gernandt, the VDMA Chief Economist, stated that the August figures indicate a lack of sustained recovery in investment and highlight ongoing pressure on the German economy.
