Perim Island Emerges as Strategic Flashpoint in Bab el-Mandeb

Perim Island, also known as Mayun, has gained strategic importance due to its position in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This narrow waterway connects the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, serving as a primary shipping route for energy and commercial vessels traveling between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

Maritime security in the region is currently strained by heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, alongside the ongoing conflict in Yemen. Houthi forces aligned with Iran control significant portions of western Yemen, while Saudi-backed groups operate in other areas.

Security disruptions near the island could force commercial shipping to divert around Africa. Such a shift would result in increased transportation costs and longer travel times for global trade.
