Belize Judiciary Integrates AI to Reduce Court Backlogs

The judicial system of Belize is implementing artificial intelligence tools to streamline legal research and reduce case backlogs through a strategic training program.

The judicial system of Belize is integrating artificial intelligence to increase efficiency and address persistent case backlogs. Under a strategic plan led by Chief Justice Louise Esther Blenman, the Judicial Education Institute is conducting a two-day workshop for judges and attorneys to modernize the country's legal processes.

The training, facilitated by LexisNexis, focuses on using AI for legal research, summarizing cases, and drafting judgments. Specifically, the judiciary is utilizing the Lexis+ AI solution to streamline workflows and enhance authoritative legal content. Judge Derek Sylvester of the Senior Courts of Belize noted that these tools assist in judgment writing and help reduce the volume of pending cases.

During the workshops, LexisNexis Director of Trade and Export Scott Wiles encouraged legal professionals to overcome hesitation regarding the technology, stating that the more they use AI, the more effective they become at utilizing it to improve their work.
