SpaceX Reports First GAAP Profit Amid Massive AI Spending

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. achieved its first GAAP net profit in Q3 2026, driven by a surge in AI revenue despite escalating capital expenditures.

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. reported its first-ever GAAP net profit in the third quarter of 2026, with revenue climbing 161% year-over-year to approximately $14.6 billion. The company's financial performance was primarily driven by its Super Intelligence segment, which grew 9.3-fold year-over-year to generate $7.6 billion, accounting for 52% of total revenue. While the connectivity segment remained the most profitable, contributing 85% of operating income, the Super Intelligence unit shifted from a loss last quarter to an operating income of $431 million.

Despite the record revenue and a net income of $4.4 billion, the company faces severe cash flow pressures. Capital expenditures reached $19.6 billion in the third quarter, with $16.4 billion dedicated to AI compute infrastructure and model training. This resulted in a negative free cash flow of approximately $35 billion for the first nine months of 2026. To sustain this growth and purchase Nvidia chips, the company plans to raise $40 billion in debt.

Looking forward, the company guided for a further increase in capital expenditures to between $35 billion and $40 billion for the fourth quarter. These costs support aggressive timelines for rocket reusability, Starlink broadband, and a new Starbase in Louisiana reported to cost $100 billion. CFO Bret Johnson stated the company is engaging with debt capital pools to fund this expansion, noting that the company remains investment grade. Additional risks include a $84.5 billion contract with Anthropic that is cancellable within 90 days.
