Anwar Ibrahim Unveils 2027 Budget Amid Snap Election Pressure
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim allocated US$112.5 billion for social welfare and subsidies to combat inflation while facing demands for early general elections.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim unveiled Malaysia's 2027 Budget on Friday, allocating US$112.5 billion to increase social welfare spending and maintain subsidies. The financial package aims to combat inflation and the rising cost of living for citizens.
The budget announcement comes as Anwar faces mounting political pressure to call for an early general election. His Pakatan Harapan coalition recently suffered a series of state election defeats in Johor and Negeri Sembilan.
While the next general election is not scheduled until February 2028, the federal partner and state rival Umno is demanding immediate snap polls. Umno's demands follow its decisive victories over Pakatan Harapan in the recent state contests.
