US Energy Firms Upgrade Nuclear Plants for AI Demand

US energy companies are utilizing power uprates to increase nuclear electricity generation to meet the rising energy needs of AI data centers.

U.S. energy companies are increasingly implementing power uprates to boost electricity generation from existing nuclear reactors to satisfy the energy demands of artificial intelligence data centers. This process involves upgrading turbines, pumps, and controls, providing a faster and more cost-effective alternative to constructing new power plants.

Constellation Energy is investing $4.3 billion to refurbish 11 reactors across Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, which will add 890 megawatts of capacity. Google has agreed to purchase the electricity resulting from these upgrades. Additionally, Amazon has partnered with Constellation Energy to upgrade the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Maryland.

In a separate effort, Vistra Corp is receiving a $4.2 billion loan from the United States Department of Energy to increase power levels at three plants located in Pennsylvania and Ohio. These initiatives align with the Trump administration's broader objective to quadruple U.S. nuclear capacity by 2050.
