Taliban Suspends BBC Radio Broadcasts Across Afghanistan
The Taliban government suspended BBC FM radio broadcasts across Afghanistan on Tuesday, citing unnamed violations amid a broader crackdown on press freedom.
The Government of Afghanistan suspended BBC FM radio broadcasts across the country on Tuesday. The Ministry of Culture and Information ordered the suspension, citing a series of unnamed violations. This action escalates a broader crackdown on the press that previously targeted domestic outlets such as TOLO News, Tamadon TV, and Rah-e-Farda.
While the suspension removes a primary news source for millions of Afghans with limited internet access, the BBC stated that its journalists will continue reporting via satellite and online. The organization is currently seeking to resolve the matter with Afghan authorities.
Some Afghan officials suggested the move relates to the BBC's perceived lack of objectivity regarding Pakistani airstrikes in Afghanistan. Those strikes have killed over 500 civilians since October 2025.
