High Court Quashes Parades Commission Restrictions on Drumcree Parade

The High Court in Belfast quashed a decision by the Parades Commission to restrict the annual Orange Order parade at Drumcree in Portadown. Mr Justice McAlinden ruled that the determination did not stand up to scrutiny because the final form of the decision had not been considered by all commission members. The court ordered the commission to pay costs following a legal challenge brought by a Portadown Orangeman.

While the commission stated the decision to impose conditions was taken unanimously on June 24, 2026, it conceded a procedural error regarding the approval of the final text. The Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland welcomed the legal victory, asserting that the position of the current commissioners is now untenable.

Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant stated that the commission must carry the respect of all communities to function. However, unionist politicians, including DUP MP Carla Lockhart and TUV leader Jim Allister, demanded the commissioners resign. Lockhart called for an independent review of the body, suggesting that the abolishment of the Parades Commission should be an active possibility.
