Chris Fall Resigns as Director of AI Standards Center

Chris Fall resigned as Director of the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) on July 20, 2026. His departure comes only three months after his April appointment by the Trump administration. CAISI, which operates within the U.S. Department of Commerce, is responsible for managing federal testing and collaborative research for commercial artificial intelligence systems.

Dr. Arvind Raman, Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, will serve as acting director and lead the search for a permanent replacement. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick is seeking a successor with deep AI expertise to fill the role.

Fall's exit follows a period of active regulatory movement, including a June executive order requiring voluntary model assessments and the establishment of the Gold Eagle cybersecurity clearinghouse. During his tenure, Fall negotiated with Anthropic to restore access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models after the Commerce Department imposed export controls.

The resignation occurs amid broader leadership vacancies in federal AI policy. David Sacks, the former White House AI and crypto czar, stepped down in March and has not yet been replaced.
