Sri Lanka Ranked Most Traffic-Congested Country in Asia

Sri Lanka ranks as the most traffic-congested nation in Asia and third globally according to the Numbeo Traffic Index 2026 Mid-Year report.

The Numbeo Traffic Index by Country 2026 Mid-Year has ranked Sri Lanka as the most traffic-congested country in Asia and the third most congested worldwide. With a traffic score of 254.5, the nation trails only Nigeria, which ranks first globally, and Costa Rica. The index determines these rankings by measuring travel time, fuel inefficiency, CO2 emissions, and time lost during daily commutes.

Severe gridlock is most concentrated in urban centers, specifically within the Western Province corridor stretching from Colombo to its suburbs. Key routes such as Galle Road and the Colombo-Kandy highway are identified as primary bottlenecks. This congestion is driven by a surge in private vehicle ownership, underfunded public transport, poor urban planning, and a lack of effective traffic regulation enforcement.

Infrastructure failures are creating significant economic losses through reduced productivity and increased air pollution. In response, analysts are calling on the government to shift priorities toward mass transit solutions, specifically recommending the implementation of light rail and bus rapid transit projects to alleviate the systemic gridlock.
