Israel Supports Gaza Militias to Target Hamas Operatives

The Israeli government is providing weapons, intelligence, and drone support to Palestinian militias and gangs to conduct assassinations against Hamas during a ceasefire.

The Cabinet of Israel is providing extensive logistical and military support to Palestinian militias and armed gangs in the Gaza Strip to undermine Hamas control. According to reports from The Wall Street Journal and Asharq Al-Awsat, the Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet supply these groups with weapons, intelligence, food, cigarettes, and drone air support. This partnership allows Israel to execute operations in Hamas-controlled territories, such as Al Mawasi, where ceasefire terms restrict the IDF.

These groups, including the Popular Forces and factions led by Hussam al-Astal, have carried out targeted killings of Hamas officials, including investigation head Mahmoud al-Astal and security officer Ahmed ZamZam. Some gang leaders were reportedly recruited by Shin Bet and trained by Mossad. In some instances, groups like the Helles Gang have forced civilians from residential blocks at the request of Israeli forces, leading to clashes and ambushes by Hamas near Gaza City.

Israel's strategy involves oversight and active intervention to protect these collaborators. Some militia members have been evacuated by helicopter to Israeli hospitals for medical treatment. However, former military officials warn that these groups may not be a viable alternative to Hamas and could eventually turn against Israel or face execution if the IDF withdraws from the region.
