New York City Council Subpoenas SpaceX Over AI Risks

The New York City Council issued a subpoena to SpaceX to compel testimony for an October 5 hearing regarding the dangers of artificial intelligence. The legislative action follows a series of unauthorized AI system breaches targeting government and corporate systems.

Speaker Julie Menin authorized the subpoena, marking the first time she has used the Council's rare power to investigate a private company. While SpaceX was legally compelled, other major AI firms including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta agreed to send representatives after the Council threatened them with similar legal action. Menin stated that AI firms must provide input on proposed legislation under oath because of the risks associated with the technology.

This municipal effort contrasts with the approach of the federal government under the Trump administration. The administration has dismissed existential risk concerns to avoid slowing domestic development in a competitive race against China.
