Democrats Secure Major Local and Congressional Gains in 2026 Elections
Democrats broke long-standing Republican majorities in Allen and Salt Lake counties and gained control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the November 2026 elections.
Democratic candidates achieved widespread victories across local and federal races in the November 2026 elections, regaining control of the U.S. House of Representatives and flipping several key local governing bodies.
In Indiana, Democrats broke a 50-year Republican hold on the Allen County Board of Commissioners as Jorge Fernandez and Kate Connor secured a governing majority. The party also swept the races for County Auditor, County Recorder, and Circuit Court Clerk, while Melissa Fisher and Lee Castillo ended a 7-0 Republican majority on the County Council. State legislative flips included wins by Julie McGill and Misti Meehan, though Republican Congressman Marlin Stutzman retained his seat.
Similar shifts occurred in the West. In Salt Lake County, Utah, Democrats are on track to end a Republican majority held since 2010, with Zach Robinson winning the At-large ‘A’ seat and Jiro Johnson securing a dominant lead in District 1. In Forsyth County, Democrat Marsie West defeated Republican Chris Parker to establish a four-to-three Democratic majority on the Board of Commissioners.
In California, Democratic incumbents maintained strong leads across the San Francisco Bay Area. A notable shift occurred in the 1st District, where Democratic state Senator Mike McGuire led Republican incumbent James Gallagher, aided by redistricting in Sonoma County. These regional gains contributed to a national trend that saw Democrats take control of the House of Representatives.
