Centrus Energy Seeks US Military Uranium Supply Contract

Centrus Energy Corp. is positioning itself as the primary US-owned supplier of enriched uranium for the US military and national security sector.

Centrus Energy Corp. is working to become the primary supplier of enriched uranium for the United States military. Chief Executive Officer Amir Vexler expects a government contract for defense nuclear fuel to be finalized this year, following a notice of intent issued by the Department of Energy in October.

The potential agreement would cover fuel for U.S. Navy vessels and small reactors at military bases, and may support the production of tritium for nuclear weapons. The company claims a competitive advantage as the only U.S.-owned entity with production-ready enrichment technology, a critical requirement given restrictions on using foreign-sourced uranium for military applications.

To support these goals, the company is developing a multibillion-dollar enrichment facility in Ohio, which is slated for commercial production in 2029. Centrus executives maintain that the company is currently the only commercially viable option for the national security sector.
