US 20-Year Bond Auction Hits Record Low Foreign Demand
The United States Department of the Treasury saw record-low foreign demand and the highest yield since 2020 during its 20-year bond auction on September 15.
The United States Department of the Treasury conducted a 20-year bond auction on September 15, 2026, that resulted in record-low foreign demand and the highest yield since the auction's introduction in May 2020. The auction priced at a high yield of 5.420% and featured a 2.0 basis point tail, the largest since 2024.
Market participation shifted sharply during the sale. Indirect bidders, typically representing foreign investors, plunged to a record low of 52.5%, while direct bidders rose to a record 30.7%. These results indicate a significant decline in primary bond market demand for the 20-year maturity, contrasting with the stronger performance of 10-year and 30-year auctions held the previous week.
The auction follows a congressional hearing where Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended recent debt auctions as successful. Despite those assertions, the September 15 data suggests a weakening appetite for long-term US debt among international buyers.
