Anthropic AI Discovers Novel ART Enzyme System

Anthropic announced its Claude AI model discovered a novel enzyme system called ART that could potentially advance gene therapy and disease treatment.

AI startup Anthropic announced the discovery of a novel enzyme system called array-associated reverse transcriptases (ART), identified by its Claude AI model. The system was found by deploying 950 software agents to analyze over 200,000 genes in 21 hours, identifying DNA sequence patterns similar to CRISPR technology in a fraction of the time typically required by human scientists.

While the underlying reverse transcriptase was previously known, Claude was the first to recognize the broader system's key features, including an array of non-coding DNA sequences and a protein of unknown function. CEO Dario Amodei presented the preliminary findings via video to the UN Security Council on September 23, suggesting the system may be programmable. Amodei noted that the discovery "may constitute a new gene-editing mechanism that could have applications in gene therapy."

The results are currently published as an unreviewed preprint. CRISPR pioneer Feng Zhang described the findings as "genuinely intriguing" and meriting further investigation. Amodei also mentioned that a team from Stanford University independently described a similar but distinct system. This discovery is the first result of Anthropic's biology research efforts, which include the establishment of a wet lab in the San Francisco Bay Area to expand the company's capabilities in life sciences and drug research.
