China Conducts Combat Patrols Near Scarborough Shoal During Allied Drills

The Southern Theater Command of the Chinese military and the China Coast Guard conducted a series of naval, air, and law-enforcement combat readiness patrols in the South China Sea between April 28 and April 30, 2026. These operations centered on the disputed Scarborough Shoal, also known as Huangyan Dao, where Chinese forces intercepted a Philippine vessel and ordered it to leave the area for violating Chinese laws.

Chinese officials described the patrols as routine countermeasures against provocative acts and rights violations, asserting that the operations safeguard territorial sovereignty. These activities coincided with the annual Balikatan exercises, involving the Philippines, United States, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, and France. The Chinese military specifically accused the Philippines of collaborating with non-regional powers to undermine regional stability.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines dismissed these claims, with Navy spokesperson Roy Vincent Trinidad characterizing the Chinese narrative as an information operation. The Philippines maintains that the Chinese presence is illegal and occurring within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone.
