Kyrgyzstan Wins First UN Security Council Seat Over Philippines

The United Nations General Assembly elected Kyrgyzstan as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2027-2028 term on June 3, 2026. Kyrgyzstan won the Asia-Pacific seat, replacing Pakistan, after securing 142 votes in the final round of a four-round secret ballot, while the Philippines received 49 votes.

This victory marks the first time Kyrgyzstan has served on the Council since gaining independence. The country campaigned on providing a voice for landlocked and mountainous developing states, with a focus on nuclear non-proliferation, the situation in Afghanistan, and climate security. The bid received decisive support from China and Russia, with analysts citing China's tensions with the Philippines over the South China Sea as a key factor in the result.

For the Philippines, the loss is the first time the nation has failed a bid for a seat since 1957, ending a three-year campaign led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro stated that the Philippines respects the decision and congratulated the Kyrgyz Republic.

In concurrent elections, Austria, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe also won non-permanent seats. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul attributed Germany's loss of a Western European seat to opposition from Russia due to Germany's support for Ukraine. All elected members will assume their roles on January 1, 2027.
