Corporate Leaders Urge Return to Skilled Trade Careers

Executives from BlackRock, Ford, Google, and Carhartt called for a resurgence in skilled trades to fill 1.7 million annual job openings through 2035.

Executives from BlackRock, Ford, Google, and Carhartt convened at Ford's Accelerate forum in Detroit to address the erosion of lifelong careers and critical labor shortages in the United States. The leaders discussed a report from the Alliance for America’s Skilled Trades, which projects 1.7 million annual openings in fields such as welding, plumbing, and electrical work through 2035. These shortages are currently slowing national infrastructure projects.

Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, argued that the loss of stable careers has weakened the foundation of American stability. He highlighted a growing divide where those with investment assets have fared better than those relying on wages. Ford CEO Jim Farley emphasized the need for high-quality apprenticeships that include support services like childcare and transportation to reduce trainee dropout rates.

Other panelists focused on the cultural and systemic barriers to entering the trades. Carhartt CEO Linda Hubbard noted that guidance counselors often fail to present trade careers as a viable option to high school students. Alphabet and Google executive Ruth Porat described the impact of these roles as a career rather than just a job, stressing their ability to change the trajectory of families.
