Power Outage in Birmingham Paralyzes CrossCountry Rail Services
CrossCountry cancelled most of its UK train services Sunday after a Birmingham power cut disabled its control centre and critical railway management systems.
A power outage in Birmingham city centre disabled the control centre and critical railway management systems for CrossCountry, leading to the cancellation of almost all its train services across Great Britain on Sunday, August 23.
The disruption affected major routes including Glasgow to Edinburgh, Manchester to Birmingham, Cheltenham to Cardiff, and Newcastle to Edinburgh. Only a near-normal service continued between Peterborough, Cambridge, and Stansted Airport, while a planned rail replacement bus service operated between Leicester and Peterborough.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander coordinated the response by requesting extra services from publicly owned operators and deploying Network Rail power teams to restore systems. To assist passengers, Chiltern Railways added services between Birmingham Moor Street and Oxford, and both Chiltern Railways and London North Eastern Railway agreed to accept CrossCountry tickets.
CrossCountry tickets for Sunday remain valid until Wednesday, August 26. Passengers facing delays exceeding 30 minutes are eligible for refunds or delay repay compensation.
