Registrar of Societies Deregisters Perikatan Nasional Coalition

The Registrar of Societies of Malaysia deregistered the Perikatan Nasional coalition following internal disputes, barring the opposition group from using its logo in the upcoming Malacca election.

The Registrar of Societies of Malaysia deregistered the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition on October 20, 2026, after determining the group's response to a show-cause notice was unsatisfactory. The agency stated that PN failed to refute the grounds for cancellation or provide sufficient justification to maintain its registration under the Societies Act 1966.

The action stems from a complaint filed by Bersatu, a member party led by Muhyiddin Yassin. Bersatu alleged that the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) breached the coalition's constitution by excluding Bersatu from a supreme council meeting on July 16. The Registrar of Societies cited the denial of Bersatu's right to attend and vote at that meeting as a primary reason for the deregistration.

The timing of the decision has sparked intense political backlash, as it occurred two days before a scheduled High Court hearing in Kuala Lumpur regarding PN's application to stay the order. The deregistration also prevents PN from using its shared logo in the Malacca state election scheduled for November 14.

PN Secretary-General Takiyuddin Hassan condemned the move as an abuse of power and an attempt to weaken political opponents. PAS Vice-President Samsuri described the timing as extraordinary and possibly unnatural. PN has announced it will file a legal challenge to contest the order.
