IOMed Resolves First Maritime Dispute, Expands Membership at Hong Kong Summit

The International Organization for Mediation announced its first dispute resolution and growing membership at its inaugural Global Mediation Summit in Hong Kong.

The International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) announced the successful resolution of its first international maritime dispute at its inaugural Global Mediation Summit in Hong Kong on May 8-9, 2026. The case, involving a charter party chain between parties from mainland China and Singapore, was settled in early May at IOMed's Hong Kong headquarters with a written settlement agreement. Secretary-General Teresa Cheng called the resolution a landmark achievement for the organization and a significant milestone for Hong Kong's maritime legal services.

The summit drew over 400 leaders and professionals from 48 countries and more than 60 jurisdictions, marking IOMed's first major international event since its inauguration in October 2025. Cheng also revealed that signatory states to the IOMed convention have grown from 37 to 41, and contracting states from 8 to 13, since the organization's launch. IOMed further announced it is exploring a dedicated panel of mediators for commodities market disputes to strengthen cross-border transaction confidence.

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee declared the city's commitment to becoming a "global mediation capital," citing its unique position as China's only common law jurisdiction and its role under the national 15th Five-Year Plan. Secretary for Justice Paul Lam outlined the HKSAR government's three-pronged support: maintaining IOMed's headquarters, seconding legal professionals, and promoting IOMed mediation clauses in international agreements. China's Foreign Ministry Commissioner in Hong Kong, Cui Jianchun, reaffirmed Beijing's continued support and called for wider international participation. The summit concluded Mediation Week 2026 under the theme "Mediate First."
