IBM and IndiaAI Report Forecasts $500 Billion AI Boost
IBM and IndiaAI project artificial intelligence could add $500 billion to India's economy by 2030 through massive workforce upskilling and infrastructure investment.
A joint study by IBM and IndiaAI, titled "From Promise to Power: How AI Is Redefining India's Economic Future," projects that artificial intelligence could contribute over $500 billion to the Indian economy by 2030. The report, launched in New Delhi, is based on surveys of 1,500 executives, 80% of whom believe AI investments will directly drive GDP growth.
Sandip Patel, Managing Director of IBM India and South Asia, stated that India could become the global "skill capital" for AI if workforce literacy increases from the current 30% to approximately 60% by 2030. With an addressable workforce of 600 million, the study estimates India will need over 350 million AI-literate professionals to reach this potential. Patel dismissed concerns regarding total job loss, arguing that AI transforms the nature of work and creates new skill sets.
Despite the optimistic forecast, the report identifies a significant "inflection gap," with 72% of organizations admitting they lag behind global peers in adoption. Only 15% of companies are currently scaling AI through cross-functional investments. Key barriers to progress include uneven data quality, trust issues, a lack of affordable and secure cloud infrastructure, and a critical skills gap among executive leadership.
