OpenAI Influencer Retreat Sparks Environmental and Ethical Backlash
OpenAI faced social media criticism after hosting a luxury retreat for content creators at a New York resort to promote ChatGPT Work.
OpenAI hosted a luxury influencer retreat, referred to as OpenAI Summer Camp or Summer Club, at Wildflower Farms in New York's Hudson Valley. The event included beekeeping, farm-to-table meals, and educational sessions designed to demonstrate practical applications of ChatGPT Work.
The retreat triggered widespread backlash on X, Reddit, TikTok, and Instagram. Critics accused the company of greenwashing, arguing that the luxury nature of the trip ignored the significant energy and water consumption of AI data centers. Some opponents also cited the company's $200 million contract with the Department of Defense as a point of contention.
OpenAI defended the event as an education-focused marketing effort. While some influencers deleted their posts in response to the outcry, content creator Grace McCarrick defended her attendance, stating her excitement for the technology's opportunities meant her morals were not compromised.
