EverWind Fuels Plans $10-Billion AI Data Centre in Nova Scotia

EverWind Fuels announced a $10-billion AI data centre in Point Tupper, sparking local protests over water usage and demands for binding environmental regulations.

EverWind Fuels announced plans to construct a $10-billion AI data centre in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, with American company Anthropic signing a 20-year lease for the facility. The project is scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2027, initially requiring 95 megawatts of electricity with a potential expansion to 420 megawatts by mid-2028.

The announcement triggered immediate local backlash, including a petition with over 24,000 signatures. Residents and opposition leaders expressed concerns regarding the lack of community consultation and the potential impact on water usage from Landrie Lake.

Tim Houston, the Premier of Nova Scotia, resisted calls for new legislation or a formal environmental assessment, arguing that existing guidelines and approval processes are sufficient. In response to the public outcry, EverWind Fuels CFO Matthew Tinari proposed a binding agreement with the province to address community concerns regarding electricity rates and water protection.
