Gilead Sciences Reports Q3 Earnings Amid Aggressive Diversification

Gilead Sciences reports third-quarter earnings as investors evaluate the company's multi-billion dollar acquisition strategy to expand beyond its core HIV franchise.

Gilead Sciences Inc. reports its third-quarter earnings on Thursday, with analysts forecasting revenue of $7.79 billion and earnings per share of $2.17. The company faces investor scrutiny over its strategy to diversify its portfolio beyond its primary HIV franchise, specifically the growth of Biktarvy.

To expand into oncology and liver disease, the company has invested over $15 billion in deals with Arcellx, Tubulis, and Ouro Medicines. Most recently, it acquired the oral IL-23R inhibitor HCXT-2001 from PepStar for $1.275 billion to strengthen its inflammatory bowel disease offerings. The company is also prioritizing the growth of Trodelvy and Livdelzi.

Investors are currently weighing whether cash flow from core operations can sustain this acquisition spree while offsetting profitability headwinds from tax expenses and acquired in-process research and development. Despite these concerns, Jefferies Group and Chase Bank have increased their price targets for the company to $185 and $170, respectively.
