Greggs to Close Four Factories and Cut 740 Jobs
Greggs will shut four manufacturing sites and cut 740 jobs over two-and-a-half years to improve efficiency despite recent sales growth.
Bakery chain Greggs plans to shut four factories and cut approximately 740 jobs as part of a food manufacturing overhaul scheduled over the next two-and-a-half years. The company will close manufacturing sites in Enfield, North Lakes, Kelso, and Seaham, while consolidating operations at other locations including Clydesmill, Manchester, and Gosforth. Retail shops will remain unaffected by the restructuring.
The overhaul is expected to cost £60 million in redundancy and disruption costs, though the company anticipates saving £20 million across the 2028 and 2029 financial years. The announcement comes despite a 7.7% increase in quarterly sales for the period ending September 26, which was driven by favorable weather and new product launches. However, the company warned that rising energy costs could create inflationary pressures in 2027.
Chief Executive Roisin Currie stated that the proposals are intended to strengthen the manufacturing network and ensure the business remains sustainable. Greggs will begin consultations with union representatives and affected workers shortly.
