Canada Loans C$195 Million to Xanadu for Quantum Plant
The Canadian government provided a C$195 million loan to Xanadu Quantum Technologies to build a photonics manufacturing facility in Toronto.
The Canadian government will loan C$195 million to Xanadu Quantum Technologies Ltd. to construct Inception, a 158,000-square-foot photonics research, development, and manufacturing facility in Etobicoke, Toronto. This investment, provided through the Strategic Response Fund, marks Canada's largest support for quantum technology to date. The facility will be built on a former Campbell's soup plant site at an estimated cost of $893 million and is expected to create 275 jobs.
Xanadu's technology utilizes light-based photonics that operate at room temperature, distinguishing it from competitors that require extreme cold. The company is currently negotiating for an additional C$195 million from the Ontario provincial government. Repayments for the federal loan will be based on a percentage of the company's future revenue.
This funding arrives as Canada competes with the United States, where the Trump administration recently invested $2 billion across nine quantum firms to secure sector leadership. Federal Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation Evan Solomon stated that the investment helps transform Canadian breakthroughs into globally competitive businesses and ensures the country remains a leader in quantum innovation.
